Making a decision about divorce

Some California couples may be struggling with whether or not to end their marriages. There are a number of factors to consider. For example, divorce can be devastating financially. In some cases, couples may make an effort to work things out to preserve their standard of living. Children may be another reason to decide against divorce, but only if parents are able to repair their relationship so that they present a healthy model.

Divorce is stressful, so people should also consider the effects the process may have on their health. People might think back to the original reason they fell in love with their spouse and whether it might be possible to get those feelings back.

On the other hand, there are some strong reasons to seek divorce. A violent spouse is one, and people should do what they must to remain safe. Protecting children is also of primary importance. Even if a parent is not violent, mistreatment can be damaging to children. A person might also insist that the other spouse agree to get treatment for addiction, and if the spouse does not agree, divorce may be the best option. Finally, some people are unable to rebuild a relationship after an infidelity.

People who are still undecided about divorce or who are uncertain about how it might affect their financial situation or their relationship with their children might want to speak to an attorney. There are a wide range of divorce legal issues that can arise, from alimony to spousal support, and in some cases an attorney can help a client to negotiate a settlement agreement that addresses these issues and which can then be submitted to the court for its approval.
